Fleas

flea-crawling

Fleas are blood-sucking ectoparasites of warm-blooded animals – they live on the bodies and feed off the blood of rodents, domesticated pets, humans & even birds. They are wingless insects with 6 legs and are 2-4mm long with long narrow bodies, which allow them to move quickly between animal’s furs, hair or feathers.

Female fleas are capable of laying 30-50 eggs per day on their host! Fleas are capable of jumping with an acceleration 20 times faster than a space shuttle and up to 50 times their height. Once a flea hatches and becomes an adult, it jumps off to find a new home on a different host. Fleas were responsible for carrying the bubonic plague, which wiped out one-third of Europe in the 14th century.

Signs of Infestation

Itching is a telltale sign of a flea infestation. You may even spot the little jumpers. On average, fleas are 2.5 millimeters long, making them visible to the naked eye. Their strong legs allow them to jump as far as 13 inches in distance.

Prevention Advice

  • Mow your lawn regularly and rake the exposed surfaces thoroughly.
  • Remove all debris, such as dead leaves and twigs, from flower beds and from under any bushes.
  • Spread cedar chips on the areas where your pet likes to lie down, under the bushes, and on flower beds.
  • Ask your gardening center about nematodes, which are small worms that can eat parasite eggs, and sulphur granules. You can spread both around problem areas to help remove fleas.
