Cockroaches

Getting rid of cockroaches can be infuriating! After all, cockroaches can survive in highly unfavourable environments, and can metabolise toxic substances. Not only do they snack on foods that are left unattended, they also damage property and leave their excrement as souvenirs.

These cockroaches pose health threats as they are capable of spreading pathogens in homes and premises. The debris created by cast-off cockroach skin, droppings and dead bodies can worsen allergies, especially amongst children and sensitive individuals.

  • Australian Cockroaches (Periplaneta Australasiae)

Signs of Infestation

The best time to spot roaches is at night since they are nocturnal insects. Because of their huge appetite and high metabolism, cockroaches can produce a large amount of droppings regularly. Cockroaches product a musty, pungent odour that increases the longer an infestation goes on for. Brown-colored smear marks may appear where water is prominent, on surfaces and walls close to the floor.

You may encounter cockroach egg cases and moulted brown skin – young roaches shed their skin 5-8 times while maturing into adulthood. There may be signs of damage to food packaging, organic goods, books and leather items.

Prevention Advice

  • Keep trash cans clean and shut – empty them regularly.
  • Clean on top and beneath the refrigerator thoroughly.
  • Do not leave dirty dishes and utensils in the sink.
  • Clean surfaces thoroughly to remove any food residue.
  • Seal up cracks and holes inside your kitchen, between the countertop and the wall, and in the baseboards.
  • Keep the door and windows screens in good condition. Screen or seal drain lines and sewer vents that lead to your home.
  • Fix any water leaks – cockroaches are attracted to moisture and water from leaks in pipes. Cockroaches can survive for months without food, but only days without water.
  • Keep your space as cool as possible whatever the weather, and keep the cockroaches away!
